Giédré - La fenêtre
ReplyDeleteI just love this song. It is not really about suicide, but it shows exactly how the world around you can drive you nuts
Here is the translation
Oh but, How ugly they are
And how moron they look
All of them
Swallow your kebab down
Maintain your fat
It is all what you have left
And you ! run
run fast, everytime faster
But above all get hit by the bus
And the other one who speaks all the time
It looks interesting
But i think he is on his own on his bench
The more i look through the window
The more i would like to jump off
It's stupid i have to admit
Especially as live on the ground flour
What is the group of hos
Only by looking at them
I understand there are faggots
And you stop shouting for help
You see that nobody gives a shit
Gosh, where do you think you are ?
Be careful where you're putting your feet
Oh too late, too bad
Oh no it was only puke
Oh once again the sir from yesterday
The nice old dad
Totally naked under his raincoat
The more i look through the window
The more i would like to jump off
It's stupid i have to admit
Especially as live on the ground flour
I do not lose time
On the old crazy lady
Who speaks to her biscuits
But sometimes stops
And shout on her own
Shut the fuck up
Who gives people advice
to go fuck themself
But to go for real
I don't look at her
I'm a bit too scared
A bit too scared to become like her
The more i look through the window
The more i would like to jump off
It's stupid i have to admit
Especially as live on the ground flour
If you see me at my window
Tell yourself i might jump off
But it's not serious. Don't worry
Unfortunately i live on the ground floor
Jean-Jacques Goldman - On ira
ReplyDeleteI came across this song when I was 14 and it immediately resonated with me and made me question the way many of us live our lives. I was struck by Goldman's melancholic but fitting description of modern, urban life and the way he espoused the message of freedom. I only realise it now but this song was a catalyst in many of the choices that I have made in life so far, choices that involve favouring what I love and am passionate about over what might be more lucrative or prestigious.
Here's my English translation of the song:
We will leave by night, a time when one doubts
That tomorrow will return.
Far from suppressed cities, we will follow the highway,
Then we will lose our bearings.
We will leave our keys, our cards and our passwords,
Prisons that detain us.
All these people we see living as if they are unaware
That one day, we must all die.
And they will be surprised one night.
Oh darling, we will go.
We will leave, you and me. Where? I don't know.
Roads are the only things that are beautiful,
It does not matter where they lead.
Oh darling, we will go. We will follow the stars and the gold seekers.
Even if we find it, we will continue searching.
We cannot escape, not even from fleeing.
When we stop to rest, we are dead.
Oh, I have obeyed so often, chosen so little
And the lost time devours me.
We will bear the cold and even burns,
We do not want warmth.
Smoke, alcohol and amour-like sedatives
Have robbed us of our pain.
The truth will make us more afraid.
Oh darling, we will go.
We will leave, you and me. Where? I don't know.
Only the roads tremble,
The destinations are similar.
Oh darling, you will see.
We will follow the stars and the gold seekers.
We will never stop at the ports.
Darling, we will go
And darkness might not catch us.
We will not change the world
But it will not change us.
My darling, take my hand.
There will be thousands of us, you will see.
And even if we already know the outcome, we will go, we will go.
Even if we already know the outcome...
Next to me,
You know that roads are the only things that are beautiful.
And believe me, we will leave, you will see.
If you believe me, darling.
If you believe me, darling.
One day, we will leave.
If you believe me, darling.
One day.
Montezuma - Fleet Foxes
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to nominate a Fleet Foxes song for a while, and the themes of this piece resonate with me strongly. It's about someone caught in a vortex between childhood and adulthood, and finding it difficult to connect with others in a way that might lay the foundation for family in future. There is a fear of putting off commitment until no-one wants to make a commitment to you, coupled with a real selfishness and a refusal to give up independence/freedom. The song also points to the way you can consciously recognise the limitations of defining life goals in relation to wealth/success/fame, but simultaneously have real difficulties in putting these objectives aside in practice.
Because everyone else is posting the lyrics, I will too:
So now I am older than my mother and father
When they had their daughter
Now what does that say about me
Oh how could I dream of such a selfless and true love
Could I wash my hands of
Just looking out for me
Oh man what I used to be
Oh man oh my oh me
Oh man what I used to be
Oh man oh my oh me
In dearth or in excess
Both the slave and the empress
Will return to the dirt I guess, naked as when they came
I wonder if I'll see any faces above me
Or just cracks in the ceiling
Nobody else to blame
Oh man what I used to be
Oh man oh my oh me
Oh man that I used to be
Oh man oh my oh me
Gold teeth and gold jewelry
Every piece of your dowry
Throw them into the tomb with me
Bury them with my name
Unless I have someday
Ran my wandering mind away
Oh man what I used to be
Montezuma to Tripoli
Oh man oh my oh me
The Duhks (NB: not the Dunks:oh:) - It's alright ma, I'm only bleeding
ReplyDelete"... if my thought-dreams could been seen
They'd probably put my head in a guillotine ..."
This is the only line in the song that describes me as I am. The rest describes me as I'd like to be:)

Michael Jackson - Earth Song
ReplyDeleteLyrics we can all resonate with given the state the world is in.
On a more personal level, this song reminds me of the first date I had with my first love. Everytime I hear it, it brings back all the memories and feelings of starting a new relationship and wondering where it will end up. I know it's not a love song by any stretch of the imagination and that may seem a bit weird to some, but given that he turned out to be, and still is, the best and most important thing in my life, it's hard not to associate that song with my life's story.
I love that Twerking song!
ReplyDeleteExtreme - More Than Words
ReplyDeleteI'm an insecure person as much as I don't like the fact. If someone loves me I'm going to have to be shown somehow rather than told, otherwise I may not believe :p
Josef Salvat - Hustler *big spoiler alert*
ReplyDeleteThis is a song that became really significant to me lately as, for me, it captures the whole love vs. lust struggle, which I am currently dealing with a lot in my life. I have been in a committed relationship for quite some time now (7 years ) and as I'm only 22 that is quite something. Yet this has also impeded me to explore other things I have always been curious about and so my partner and I decided to try the open relationship thing and let each other explore the things we are curious about, in an open and honest environment. Usually this works out just fine as I am quite capable of separating sex and love, but there are times when the heart just takes over... When on a research trip some time ago, I met this amazing guy, 30 years older than me, but we had a great connection, talked for hours and had amazing sex. We've been keeping in touch for the last three months with incredibly long emails, and as much as I know that I have to see it as a purely sexual thing, sometimes my heart takes over and wonders if there is more to it than just that... This battle I find back in the song, and that's why it immediately became clear to me that this would be my pick.
Flogging Molly - The worst day since yesterday
ReplyDeleteWhere to start? sure the title is a bit deceiving, because despite the nostalgic tune and the rather sad lyrics, the general feel is uplifted by the vein of rock, which is somewhat of a push for trying again, despite, how the very opening line says: "I know I miss more than hit".
And this is one of the two lines that really make this song mine, because I tried and tried hard for some things in my life, one of them being a career as a sports man, which failed dragged down by injuries and probably also the lack of the needed talent.
And for this reason the second line that I feel the most is: "the dreams I once had now they are in bed", which is quite the melancholy bit of being unable to completely forget them, but simply having them aside and move on.
I could go on forever, but I bored you all enough and in the end I guess the song itself might tell more than I could do.
"Though these wounds have seen no wars
Except for the scars I have ignored"
Matt Alber - End of the World
ReplyDeleteThis song means obviously a lot to me for many reasons I'll try to explain.
Being in love and living a relationships can feel like being on a rollercoaster indeed. I lived the ending of a relationship with a guy some weeks ago and I had never been so in love with anyone. So you try to get over while you wonder if you just have to let it go (the dying romance) or if is not really fully ended like the last line of the song:
"If there is nothing left then why are you holding on to me like it's the end of the world?"
I love how spot on this lyrics are and how effortless Alber tells a story which everyone (well, specially gay of course) can feel somehow linked to in one moment of their lived.
And I was in the nostalgic mood the evening I submitted this so It was kinda expressing the way I felt in that moment.
Finally, the class, elegance of the execution of this song, and the nostalgic, romantic vibe and old-fashioned charm that Alber express in his great performance fits me very well too I think.
So even though this isn't musically speaking the kind of song I usually embrace, I obviously love this song and it can be one of the personal themes of my life.
(in reply to the discussion on Jean-Jacques Goldman's On ira)
ReplyDeleteHugues Daniel is being unnecessarily condescending. Goldman might not be his cup of tea but it's undeniable that he has a knack for connecting with people via his lyrics and melodies, hence his astounding popularity in France. His impact on the younger generation of French singers can be seen from the line-up on the "Génération Goldman" tribute albums (2 volumes so far).
Besides that, he is the current leader of Les Enfoirés, a big group of French singers (with many stars amongst them) who perform together for a week every year, and proceeds go to the charity Les Restos du Coeur.
I respect your admiration of JJ Goldman and your love of any song of him. I wasn't condescending in the game thread, I was answering Chris who compared Goldman to Springsteen and I don't think they have the same dimension at all... All the rest, as you said, is personal opinion. I love a lot of popular artists from the French variety who aren't necessarily better than him artistically. If you think he's greater than I think, no problem. Don't hesitate to support your favorite artists in the game, you're welcome.
DeleteTo be honest, I wouldn't say I'm a big fan of his. I just like some of his songs. The only reason I replied was because it seemed like Chris seemed to take your word for it although I would say that it's just one point of view among many others.
