TF Song Game - Four Weddings And/Or A Funeral

Hi TFBSG team,

Here is a blog post for anyone wanting to explain their entry for this game - in particular, if you want to clarify whether your song is for a wedding or a funeral, or the particular meaning your track holds for you.

As always, posting a justification for your song is optional and can be as long or as short as you like. Please try and protect your identity by avoiding revealing any information that could be used to tell who you are, and by posting anonymously in the comments section below.

Banarama references are BANNED.

  1. Black Lace - Agadoo

In my part of the world - you usually end up dancing to this and/or the Maracena at the evening wedding function

  2. "What Ever Happened? - The Strokes"

To be played at my funeral.
Because I want to be forgotten and I don't want to be reminded.

  5. Man Arai - Become A Thousand Winds (Sen no Kaze Ni Natte)

First thing first: The Japanese lyrics were based on a poem "Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep" by Elizabeth Frye, written by Man Arai himself (so was the melody of the song). Here's the translated version:

"Do not stand at my grave and weep
    I am not there
    I do not sleep
    I am a thousand winds
    Thousand winds
That blow in the open sky

I am the autumn sunlight on ripened grain
I am the diamond glints on snow
I am the gentle autumn rain
I am the birds that awaken you in the morning
I am the stars that watch over you at night

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there, I did not die
    I do not sleep
    I am a thousand winds
    Thousand winds
That blow in the open sky.

    I am a thousand winds
    Thousand winds
That blow in the open sky.

That blow in the open sky."

The most popular version in Japan is NOT this one, however. The song was made popular by a Japanese tenor Masafumi Akikawa. His version made the top of the charts and even made it to the year-end Japanese music festival (Kohaku), which was pretty rare for a classical music piece. You can listen to his version here:

His voice and enunciation are better than Man Arai but in my opinion he lacks the raw emotions when performing the song. This is probably the only version sung by the original singer on Youtube.

What a beautiful song by the way. Totally reminds me of my parents. RIP dad and mum

  6. Ludwig Van Beethoven - Piano Concerto no. 5 II

This is the backing music for a scene in my wedding. Things are winding down. Half the guests have left or are too lacking in conscious to function. I am sitting on a hill nearby with my beautiful partner. (The speakers, erm, are really loud and I can hear this track from there :oh:). Just a really serene and loving piece of music imo :inlove:

You have to listen to this LOUD and with EARPHONES to appreciate it fully imo :oh:

  8. The song is so pretty I can see it being played at either my wedding or funeral. It essentially builds, telling a story of one's life, making it perfect for a funeral. However, it's subtle enough to easily become a metaphor to leave the single life for the married one. The progression in dreams I think make this song especially great.

    had a dream
    That I could fly
    From the highest swing.
    I had a dream.
    ..

    I had a dream
    That I could fly
    From the highest tree.
    I had a dream.
    ..

    I'm ready now
To fly from the highest wing.

    I had a dream.

  9. I choose Those Were The Days because it is about reminiscing and remembering the fun times in the past but it's got a very somber feel to it as well.

  12. To Build A Home

There are elements about the song that suggests this song could be part of a wedding ceremony (the orchestra bit during the bride walking down the aisle)

But the singing conveys a sad tone, where it sort of talks about the start and the end of a relationship. In this case I think it would be fitting in a funeral too.

  13. Hello by Lionel Richie

I can envision hearing it during the wedding dance/slow dance party. It is just a smooth and warm song that would fit the occasion. Lionel's voice is also pretty good.

No, I wouldn't play this in my funeral. When I listen to this song I feel joy, I don´t even know what it means (I think its literal meaning is jumping on puddles but who cares, really?), it just brings me peace and put a smile on my face. That's how one would feel on their wedding I guess. The arrangements, how it builds, all is made to give you a sense of euphoria and is simply beautiful.

  15. DollyRose did all my work for me as she tends to do. Bless her heart.

She posted the lyrics for My Life as a Ghost. It feels like a love song for a dead couple. Tanya is dark and lovely like that. But it also works for.a wedding and a funeral. I always wanted it played at my funeral, not that I will have a funeral. The city will incinerate me and throw my ashes into a trash can.
