  1. Gong - Mystic Syster

Female "voice" is so interesting and trippy. Also this song I would put in the movie about my sister.

  3. Moon Duo - Sleepwalker

I wanted a song with a strong specific atmosphere and where the lyrics take a backseat, a song that would work really well in a cool and mysterious movie scene. The fact that the title also contains some truth was a bonus.

  4. Kylie Minogue - Jump

I've been a Kylie fan since I was 11 years old, so if there was ever going to be a movie about my life it's pretty obvious that one of her songs would feature in there. I choose this track as it's less obvious than some of her well known songs. I also love the lyrics.

  5. The Crow: Hooverphonic - Sometimes (it's ok, I'm out in semis :()

That's what I wrote in my thread in the games forum: I had absolutely no idea what to pick as my life is not nearly interesting enough for a movie. However, I remembered this concept album from Hooverphonic (Hooverphonic presents Jackie Cane) telling the story of a fictional singer. I always liked this song Sometimes and was always taken with the sentence 'Sometimes we have to sing out of key'. I cannot sing at all, so singing out of key would describe me pretty well. However, I interpret that sentence as 'not doing things in an ordinary way' or 'not going with the crowd'. I'm not sure if that describes my life, but I think that it is a good life motto. And some parts in my life surely perfectly fit that sentence. I also like the song a lot; it is by far my favourite song of Hooverphonic. The way Geike sings it is phenomenal: she succeeds in pretending to sing out of key while not actually singing out of key (not sure if that makes sense, but that's how it sounds to me).

  6. Aretha Franklin - That Lucky Old Sun

The lyrics are kind of self-explanatory - the mortal life often feels like a ripoff. Without getting all religious I do hope there's something else out there. In my movie, it would play during a sad moment obvs.

  7. As explained by the band, :"“Youth” is about the nostalgia and the strange mix of happiness and sadness that swirls around it. It is sung from a parent to a child."

I relate this as I lost my father at a young age and the part of:

    "Fly
Feel your mother at your side
Don't you know you got my eyes
    I'll make you fly
You'll be happy all the time
I know you can make it right
    I'll make you..."

It reminds me of something that my dad would have said to me. Therefore, it is quite a sentimental song for me.

  8. The Grateful Dead - Box Of Rain

This song captures a tactic I use when confronting difficulty, associated with attempting to pursue a state of detachment from surrounding expectations or forms of value (the world is only a "box of rain").

  9. Bliss n Eso - Coolin ft. Rob Curly and Dizzy Wright (Matmagix send)

First off the song is quintessentially Australian, talks about the beaches, surfing etc. so it does make comment of a carefree and relaxed Aussie in general who has fun with his/her mates.

Pull up to the spot with my people on a vibe, yo
Coolin' with my fam, yeah my clan is super fly, hoe
Coasting in my Kombi like a calm breeze through them palm trees
So can I get a witness, yeah that’s the ticket

However the thematic concern of the song is really about establishing one's independence and being distinct from the world, and sometimes in a rebellious and countercultural way.

You better make way when my tape plays
'Cause like Kid Cudi I'ma make my own waves

Yes, I get zen with the ocean, this shit is fucking awesome
I write rhymes out here floatin’, so welcome to my office
I never conform to the norm, I'm a fuck you to the system
I got independent co-pimpen in my blood that’s how I’m livin’

The song celebrates diversity and difference is ok:

No, it don’t matter we don’t fit your frame
We’re picture perfect in a different way
So what we livin’ free and young?
We own the night until we see the sun
So witness us, live it up, you can call us crazy
Listen up, zero fucks given on the daily

Overall the song is romantic, idealistic, humorous, logically structured yet relaxed and flowing, and with a dose of crazy, which sounds somewhat like me. Of course not everyone will like it but I don't mind, cos "It’s all peace and love and that’s the way it’s gonna be. All you haters are mad, Always got something to say
(Bless you) 'Cause I’m doing my thing, and I’m blowing my loud all up in your face." :)

  10. I apparently could not edit my post for some strange reason (as I wanted to) so I post my description one more time.

    My song is:

Opeth - In My Time Of Need

My song describes the feeling of anxiety and hopelessness that I often experience so it suits me really well in particular when I am in a depressive mood but I enjoy listening to it regardless of that. I am no stranger to suicidal thoughts either ( in the past) and they're expressed in a veiled way in this song too.

"And I should contemplate this change
    To ease the pain
And I should step out of the rain
    Turn away"

The melancholy is conveyed in such an expressive way and the song is simply beautiful, esp. when the chorus kicks in again with an oddly mellotrone nearing the end. It creates a very unusual ambiance that is sad & uplifting at the same time.

The lyrics of the song are also very emphatic and give me personal connection as well.

  11. My song was The Worst In You

Heard this earlier in the year, and my first thought was this sounds like something you would hear in a decade aughts Indy Film. So when this theme came up,my thought was this song as it's one I would use about a road trip I took after college in that decade.

  12. Into Each Life Some Rain Must Fall - Ella Fitzgerald & The Ink Spots

As a person struggling with depression, this song is something like a friend to me. It perfectly describes how my life has been — a constant deprivation of luck and happiness.

"Into each life some rain must fall
But too much is falling in mine"

But on the other hand, it also expresses my belief that after all the crap that I've been through, I'm still keeping that hope intact that someday all will be well again.

"Into each heart some tears must fall
But some day the sun will shine"

Plus, I want my movie to be classy, so a little Ella and The Ink Spots won't hurt at all.

  13. Fake Plastic Trees - Radiohead
This song perfectly describes how I felt when I was in the closet (for a quite long period in my life) and feeling hopeless and terrified, trying to fit into the conservative environment, trying to fulfill my career expectations, trying not to disappoint my family, which affected a lot to the way I related to people and made me have quite fake plastic relationships with most of them, a number of fake plastic conversations with my friends (about women I obviously didn't care about) and feeling empty many times.

Fortunetely I moved forward eventually and I'm in a very good place now but, although it had a happy ending, I figured in a movie about my life this should play an important part
