TF Song Game - Autumn

Autumn is here (at least in some, non-Australian, parts of the world), and a dance-music loving quiet fowl has asked us to capture the crunchy, golden-brown goodness of this season in song form. Due to the subjective nature of the theme, some people have asked for the blog to be set up so that participants can clarify the meaning/intention behind their entries.

In the comments section under this post, you can provide anonymous descriptions of why or how your songs relates to the world of the autumnal. Where possible, try to avoid making your identity evident in your replies. As before, responses can be as long or as short (or as non-existent) as you choose.

Any comments provided will be posted on the TFBSG thread so that they are accessible to everyone.

  1. Isaac Albeniz – El Albaicin

This piece is from probably my favourite piano work called The Iberia Suite which is a ruinously underplayed masterpiece that everyone needs to listen to. Again and again. Really, really, really stunning piano composition. Orchestral, emotional, rhythmic, melodious, percussive. Just. So. Good.

In terms of how it relates to Autumn, this piece makes me think of hedgehogs doing the pasodoble amongst a wave of swirling brown leaves. It also makes me remember the period at the start of my honours year (Autumn, where I am) when I was drowning in work and compulsively listening to Albeniz.

  2. Linkin Park - No more sorrow.

I nominate because that is a really strong political song and in US on Autumm (November) is the Election moment.

  3. God Is An Astronaut - Echoes

I have a special bond with this band and this song in particular, because it reminds me of personal struggle and the amazing support of a special person as my brother is. But why autumn?
It is because I discovered them at the end of November-early December, early one morning, while I was having my daily 150km commute to go training with my brother. I was already quite in some pain, I have a genetic back problem, but that year it seemed as if I could barely walk without any pain.
This song soon became for me the symbol of struggle, the difficulty of overcoming your limits and your bad days, the idea that after the autumn and your feeling of being worn down, there's another year to arrive and you can go out there and fight and prove yourself.

When I listen to this song, even now that I am retired, I still find the same energy and the same positivity, the one that I get from the unconditional support of my brother, even now that my life goals have changed.

I would be happy if only one person would understand or feel for this song, because they are an amazing band and even if there are no lyrics, their power of comunication is outstanding. I say one person, because this is no genre for TFers, but hope dies last.

  4. Hilary Duff - Come Clean

This song always had an autumny feel to me. Rain coming down, wind blowing. And not least - a fresh start. Away with the old, get ready for the new, like when trees shed their leaves. It may take some time for them to grow back, but you know it will happen in time.

  5. Valerie Carter - Face of Appalachia

Multiple autumn associations in this song, hardly need to explain them, but just in case anybody missed them:
    - the Appalachian Trail is home to probably the most spectacular autumn colours in the world
    - the song takes a melancholy look at the slow but sure loss of this natural paradise to short term economic interests, analogous to the feeling of loss many feel as summer draws to an end
    - similarly, the song touches on the loss of innocence/youth at a personal level
    - Valerie Carter's beautiful voice brings out all these associations beautifully, besides just sounding very autumny in general IMO

I don't expect the song to do well, it's simply not the kind of song that gets much attention in this game. In a way that was my motivation for submitting it. For me, this kind of unspectacular simplicity captures the spirit of this theme, and if a few people enjoy listening to it, that is far more important than whether it reaches the final:)

  6. Lapsley - Station

First song that came to mind when I heard the new theme. For my job, I need to get up quite early, and there is really no better song to face the early cold of October with. The beautiful combination of the male and female voice is perfectly balanced with the calm beat. Simplicity at its best.

  7. The Soft Pink Truth - Let There Be Ebola Frost

Because sometimes all you need is Ebola frost.
"Let There Be Ebola Frost" is to Autumn what "Let it snow, let it snow" is to Winter - An absolute hymn to the time of the season.
Bonus: Fits well into Halloween festivities.

  8. Lil' Kim - Aunt Dot

I know a lot of folks won't give it a chance because it's rap music, but I will say that this tune is hip hop story telling at it's finest with the dark and sinister beat and and heavy lyrical content.

Perfect because most of the story takes place indoors where the whether is snowy where Kim opens her door to a familiar face and they must flee due to a letter she receives. Now the whether is cold and not favourable as they drive in the snow to safety.
